Spoilers forward…
I believe what Balki (together with the serial killer) is saying is that this: “Criticise all you want, however do it truthfully, ethically, responsibly”. This can be the closest this director has come to a “message film”.
Balki’s Chup begins in traditional serial killer-thriller trend. On a wet evening, a grotesque homicide is found. The sufferer is a movie critic. There are knife slashes throughout his physique, and on his head, as is later found, there’s a star – as in, a star ranking. So we’ve got a novel signature: a person (or girl) who targets movie critics and carves star scores on them. Sunny Deol performs Arvind, the cop on the case, and he cracks the script’s cleverest facet: the rationale behind every of those our bodies being mutilated the way in which they’re. It’s delightfully perverse. This alone would have made for a cracker of a cat-and-mouse thriller, however Balki (who co-wrote the screenplay with Rishi Virmani and former critic Raja Sen) has different concepts. He introduces a parallel monitor: the romance between Dulquer Salmaan’s Danny and Shreya Dhanwanthary’s Nila/Neela. “Nila” is Tamil for moon. “Neela” is the title of the heroine of Nayakan. Saranya Ponvannan, the heroine of Nayakan, performs this heroine’s mom. May there be a extra “Balki” contact?
